Ideas Anyone?

Author: G /

Well, our GRAND OPENING is coming up on July 25th!  We have lots planned for the opening including a wine tasting, free cappuccinos, special concert performances by Everly and surprise guests and raffle/auction prizes too!  But we still have a long ways to go before we've paved our way in this town.  We are so grateful for the website traffic from all over the world (thanks mostly in part to the loyal fans of One Tree Hill's Bethany Galeotti), but we still need our biggest fan base to be right here in wonderful Battle Ground, WA.

So, this post is for anyone with a creative bone in their body.  Post in the comments here with your ideas to help make "Galeotti's" a Battle Ground household name.  Give us your suggestions for how to economically spread the word about being a part of our family at 801 E. Main st.  Some advertising already in process is a cover story for local band ENATION in Vancouver family magazine in which Galeotti's is mentioned, and a centerfold in popular coupon mailer Family Values.

We can't wait to see what's inside those brilliant minds...

In case you weren't sure... by posting here you acknowledge that we are not legally obligated to you in any way should we decide to use your idea in any form.  We'd love to give you a shout out for it though :)

A little silly idea.... Because of the financial crisis, two Danish phone compainies has been merged. To promote the new name, workers from the new merged company stood in different malls handing out water bottles with their logo on the bottles to customers, some of them even helped the customers put things into bags, that also had their logos on them.

And then there are the people in cities like Copenhagen that has a whole sign/logo/menu list covering their body, and on top of this cover/poster like thing, there is an arrow - a mark to indicate a direction.

1. Host a carwash outside the restaurant and give people "1 meal free" coupons. If they come in once for a free meal, they will come in again to pay :)

2. Perhaps this is cynical, but get Joy and Jonathan to talk up the restaurant in every interview they give. It's free and it couldn't hurt, right?

3. Lure people inside with the promise of a raffle or some kind of contest.

4. Offer to watch the kiddies while the parents eat (in-house daycare, at no extra-charge!)

Perhaps an open mic night?

Or, have some sort of family-club where they get discount prices when they come in to eat? You would sign up for this, kind of like a discount club? So, you would build your clientele and get to know your customers at a more personal basis when they come in to dine?

You need to definately put yourself out there. Maybe make a commercial or something to introduce yourself to people in the area who may not your are there.

Also come up with a certain dessert or something that specific to your business.. Something you cant' get anywhere else.. I go to this place in Florida on Vacation for this Cake and I crave it all the time but I can only get it there.. Makes me want it even more..

I hope that helps a little..

^^ Oops sorry about the deleted comment and I'm sorry for the length of this post, lol.
Anyway, off the top of my head a few things that come to mind are:

* Putting fliers in letter boxes - they don't need to be elaborate, just something basic with the details of the restaurant or maybe even a print-out of the menu so that people know what kind of food you guys serve.

* Perhaps taking out an ad in a local newspaper? You guys aren't too far from Portland right? How about putting an ad in a newspaper there or in the paper's of nearby towns? I'm not sure how expensive it is but I'm sure you can get these quite cheaply if the word count isn't too high and the ad is simple rather than too complex.

* How about putting some posters up around town? You could even run some kind of a poster competition of you're inclined - there are a lot of people online that are very articstic so it could be a way to involve those of us who are far away from the restaurant and would love to help you guys out :)

* Having some kind of event night could be a good way to get people in to the restaurant on the really quiet days. If there's a day int he middle of the week that always seems to be dead you could have it on that night - bars/ pubs have quiz nights usually in the middle of the week in order to draw people in and it keeps them coming back. Perhaps if you can tailor this to the restaurant it could work - even something like a wine-tasting evening could be good, or if not wine then coffee.

* If there are a lot of small local acts in the area perhaps you could get them to perform on a certain night of the week in the restaurant for some ambiance, if you've got the set up for it of course. It wouldn't have to be a band per se but just someone playing the guitar or singing - kind of like the lounge singers of days gone by.

* Another way is to affiliate with people/ other local businesses so that you are mutually benefiting. For example you could have fliers for their businesses and they could in turn have fliers for the restaurant in theirs.

* Also, I'm not sure what the local artistic community is like there but where I live there are often cafes and restaurants that hang the works of local artists on their walls that can be purchased by the public - so you'd be advertising the works for the artist and they in turn can direct buyers to the restaurant. Not only is this a form of affiliation but it could also give the restaurant a sense of atmosphere that is representative of the community, if the art or photography reflects this of course.

* Advertising on the local radio station(s) could also be a good idea, although I'm not sure what the expense of this would be - sometimes Radio DJs just read out ads rather than you having to go to the expense of purchasing airtime so if you've got contacts there it might pay to look into it!

I'm not sure if those ideas are helpful at all but I do wish you guys the best of luck both with the business and with the Grand Opening, which is sure to be awesome!

So I am from portland and a big big OTH fan, and I have extended family that lives in battleground. I was up there the weekend before last for my brother's farewell dinner (he is being deployed to iraq) and I drove by to see where the restaurant was, and I'm not gonna lie, I couldnt really tell where it was at first. I mean, I had to turn around and drive by again. Are you guys gonna put a big ole sign in front or something? You should totally get those big spotlight things for grand opening night. I think my friend and i will come up for it. How exciting! My brother's in laws live super close to there down on SW 4th Ave, and they said they did "hear that Irbys got sold" so word IS out to the locals. Good luck, see you on the 25th!

A charity link. Have a night or a week where some profit goes to the local "blah blah" foundation. Maybe be open to hosting some of their events.

A fun radio commercial with a recognizable jingle. Be sure it is placed during the breakfast show or drive. Can save money by using the family's talent. Would only have to pay for the space (people listen to the radio more in the summer).

If the community is small enough, get an attractive print out of your menu and do some old fashioned direct mail. Risky since a lot of people throw out junk, but I think people tend to keep a menu over a simple ad.

Random idea of the night (since it's two am) - product placement on One Tree Hill. Nathan, Haley, and Jamie - during a bball away game -- go eat at Galeotti's, lol. sooo kidding.

A tactic in NYC (as I'm sure you know) is using the celebrity name to sell the restaurant. In NYC, it's like where has Regis been? People tend to love celebrity hype.. So using that type of hype could help too. I know in small towns, people tend to talk. So, basically, get regis philbin (sp?) to go to galeotti's haha. A red carpet night could be fun.. but like a 1920s italian mob red carpet lol.

The best advice I can give you, based on my limited advertising knowledge, is really think about how you want to position yourselves. Ex: casual, high end, cool hang out, etc. Find out who you want to target... so say you think women (24-64) would go to the restaurant, try to get on radio stations women listen to or newspaper sections women read, etc. And the thing to do is create a consistent image that is always, in some way, evident in advertising, how you talk about it, promotions, etc. Just thinking about what you want the restaurant to mean in the community and translating that meaning in ads or flyers, etc. can really go a long way. Your events should reflect that image too. :)

A few ideas.....

I don't know your hours of operation or the restaurant layout, but here you go.

1. Organize regular events such as cooking classes and wine tastings.
2. Utilize your chamber of commerce for networking and "getting the word out". I see from reading the other posts that flyers have been recommended, but it also seems as if the restaurant is not geared to having piles of flyers either hung on the window or around the entry. You don't want them to be distracting or take away from your clients initial impression of the restaurant and its ambiance.
3. Create small catering opportunities for private business events. If you are offering deserts, the cupcakes mentioned in a previous blog post, your house coffee, etc., deliver packages to businesses in the area to create exposure for your high quality product and service. The package should be representative of this as well.
4. Make sure that the building has an inviting appeal to someone who is not familiar with the restaurant. This is especially true if it is a drive by location. For example, one blog post discussed repainting, etc. but make sure that the landscape around the building is inviting as well and the impression mirrors the quality of food, ambiance and service that your are offering inside your restaurant.
5. Many times, direct mail can be less expensive and more effective than print advertising. Send a card (representative of the restaurant) to businesses and homeowner's in the area. The card could include a buy one meal, receive the 2nd at half price coupon.
6. Create a frequent visitor card (The Family Only Card), which can used for a discount on a bill, complimentary bottle of wine or other item after a certain number of dinners in the restaurant. You could also have the card geared towards different incentives, The Family Only Card - Michael's Wine Appreciation, Joy's Dessert Thank You (rough ideas)

I was in my advertising sales class, and we were talking about this, so I thought I would put it out there.

It's probably costly, and I would research the area before doing it, but having a "Remote" - where basically a DJ from a popular radio station comes in and, throughout the day, announces that he or she is at Galeotti's enjoying the fine food and maybe a small event you have going on like live music, a signing, etc.

We were talking about how these are effective because the DJs have a following they would bring in ON top of the people who would come in for your event. DJ groupies.. who knew, eh? lol.

Good outside lighting, not just on the store front but in the parking lot as well. A smooth parking lot is nice as well. Spend the money. When I'm in town and have money to spend I'll go to the place tht looks like the owners/operators take the most pride. And one area that is often neglected is lighting and the parking lot. So it's really impressive when a restaurant has nice, special looking lighting and a well maintained parking lot.

Come up with something signature for birthdays. I don't know how "fine dining" your place is going to be so it could interupt the ambience if it's real ritzy, but one of people's favorite things about the restaurants in my town are the birthday traditions. Like all the waiters sing Happy Birthday to the honoree. At the Mexican restaurant in my town I think they take a birthday polariod of the honoree and stick it up on a special wall. People in my town loveee that.

Catering is a hugeeee thing you can do. Even if you only do it a couple times a year for small organizational events. If your food is good it WILL get the word out. Almost every organizational event I've gone to this year was catered by a restaurant. And people did buzz quite a bit when the food was good. And chances are the people that you cater for at one event are involved in a billion other organizations, like me, and will remember you when it's time for those organizations' events.

Soup! It sounds almost ridiculous to suggest but you need a good signature soup. Most restaurants have signature everything but soup. Or if they have a soup, it's totally uninspring - been there, done that. But people are in need of a good, filling soup because when you eat soup somehow it the liquid aspect of it makes you feel like you're eating a lot more healthier than a big hunk of meat. My mom works in Arizona for a month out of every year. She goes to this restaurant called White Chocolate out there multiple times just for their tomato soup. Made with heavy cream, fire roasted tomatos, hickory bacon and gin, it's something out of the norm and totally delicious. She finally got the chef to give her the recipe. She made it a couple times here at home and gave some to friends. They loved it and the word has spread so far about this magnificent soup that when she makes it these days she has to make HUGE vats of it. And two businesses are interested in having it in their establishments. And most of the soup's fans are meat and potatoes people through and through. But they all succumb to the power of a good soup.

Always have paper menus made available with prices outside of the store. Sometimes people are hesitant about going to a new restaurant because they don't know what kind of food is served or how the prices run, so menus on the outside enable people to see this information without feeling pressured to make a commitment to dining right then and there. Also you should sell Galeotti's memorabilia like t shirts or give them away for free at the grand opening. people will never deny a free shirt

This may sound really simple and might me something you guys have already done, but it's worth a shot. My family just recently started up a Zipline Adventure in the Texas Hill Country. I would say probably 20-30% of the calls I get end with someone requesting a place in town to eat at. Most of our business comes from tourist, but we have gotten together with local restaurants in our area of Wimberley and put links to their businesses on our website and we recommend them to our customers. You'd be surprised at how much the local businesses in your area are willing to help. With the word of mouth advertising the restaurants we have lowered our advertising cost considerably. Best of Luck in your new business.

P.S. make friends with the local Bed and Breakfasts. About 20% of our customers are recommended by them. In exchange for their help we offer them free zipline rides and THEY LOVE IT! They practically throw people at us.

I'm not sure if things are different in Battle Ground than over here in Niagara Falls, but around here, one of the *only* ways a new restaurant can thrive lately is by offering some sort of coupon. Another poster commented on this too, but suggested free dinners. I don't even think you need to go that far (plus, free dinners wouldn't be helpful to the restaurant's budget, I'm sure) - but in an economy where people are going out to eat less and less, you have to give them a reason to venture out. Something as simple as $5 off of two dinners, or a free appetizer or whatnot. Like that previous comment said: give people a reason to pass through the doors the first time, and they're bound to return again and again.

I am not by any means a Hospitality Management major in school, it's actually quite opposite...Electrical and Mechanical Engineering BUT I do have a few ideas to toss around about attracting business, helping to solidify your name in the community as a great restaurant, etc.

The first would be to incorporate in some way advertising where you get your food and other products from. Inquiring minds want to know. In a day and age where there is so much animal cruelty and pesticides, chemicals, etc one can never be too sure what they put in their mouth and always where it comes from. Make sure your people know where their food is coming from. It gives them reassurance, peace of mind and a want to come back in the future.

Also, offer gift certificates. They don't have to be like the chains where the cards are made of plastic that ultimately is harmful for the environment but instead, set yourself apart from the norm and have them printed on recycled paper. Obviously, if purchased it'd have to be signed by one of the owners and maybe put a watermark on it to protect the validity and authenticity.

Have a monthly or bi-monthly drawing for business people in the area who frequent the restaurant. Have them drop their business card in a bowl or something and extend a free lunch to the winner. He or she in turn will tell their friends, clients, and acquaintances hence drawing more business and you just got yourself a mailing list without even starting one officially.

I'm not to familiar with the area or Washington state for that matter, but introduce yourself to area hotels, motels, B&Bs, etc and see if you can advertise in their book things ( the correct word escapes me) where there is a listing of local restaurants and stuff.

I don't know about your current practices either but be sure that someone in your management position or an owner always greets the customers with a smile and a hello. Perhaps they can fill the roll of hostess from time to time, offer a quick joke or a story and be friendly. Kindness always goes a long way. And also, when the party leaves, be sure to help them see their way out. It was make a difference in their perceived attitude towards you and your establishment.

Educate yourself about local events that are going on throughout the community, such as Relay for Life and help to sponsor it. Your name will be in print, will be out there, and you know you are supporting a good cause.

Have daily menu specials. Whether it be just the entree or a signature dessert or lunch specials, etc. People want a good deal. They want quality more than quantity and will always come back if the food is always to the highest standards.

Finally, have a couple theme nights every once in awhile. Whether it be a "Happy Hour" on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Associate yourself with different vineyards out of Napa or wine connoisseurs who do wine tastings, etc. This can be a special event that will attract many people. And it doesn't have to be a frequent thing. Monthly, would make it extra special. Ah, what else? Hmmm. Perhaps get some local bands in or whatnot...... whether it be jazz, purely instrumental, etc. The point is, you want people to step on in through the doors and feel as if they are coming over to see friends and or relatives. Make it as inviting as possible. Music just adds to the whole ambiance.

I'll be in touch if I can come up with anymore ideas. Good luck with everything!

Theres no better way to advertise than word-of-mouth! As long as the service is spectacular and the food is good...people WILL TALK. Great service is important, keep that in mind..and they will flood in.

Also, participating in things for school groups helps too...such as tricky trays. It would definitely help get your name out there.

Best wishes and good luck!

Create a facebook and myspace page for your restaurant! Get your friends and family to "add" you as a friend - people look through their friends pages.. and will see your page (like I did when I saw a link from a friend of a friend suggesting the restaurant on facebook!) Great way to network!

Tara said...

Oh - and where is your menu? Post that sucker on your website, and on your future myspace/facebook pages! Even if it's just a "sample" menu...?

Courtney said...

I like the wine tasting, open mic night and cooking class idea (not sure if you have the equipment for that though) I think the more local events you can have at the restaurant the better.

One idea I had was having a booth at Battle Ground (Harvest) Days. That seems to be a very "local" thing to do. You could have samples, menus and business cards available for people. Its a good way to get to know the community. Also isn't there a Farmer's Market during the summer months? I can't remember what its called but a lot of people go to that as well. Especially if the restaurant is going organic you might find a lot of new customers through that venue...just a thought.

I'm not far away and cant wait to try your restaurant for the first time...I'll be there soon.

This may be cheesy and Joy might not want to do it but what if she had an appearance there were she would sign autographs and such? If OTH is where a lot of your customer base is coming from it might be a good way to draw more poeple to the restaurant.

Good luck!

Nahla said...

I was thinking that at your grand opening, why not have a tour or scavenger hunt, which would allow your customers to see the restaurant?

Or, you could do hand molds, which you could put on a wall, or like the walk of fame? It would be a neat touch, especially when the people come back in a couple of years to see their hands in the restaurant. it would be quite memorable.

if not the wall. maybe a signing place where people would leave their names and anything else liek a memorable quote, fav coffee drink? this would make your customers feel like they are part of the restaurant, and if they come back in a few years, it would be a very sentimental feeling seeing their 'autograph' or hand mold on the restaurant wall.

I got a call from a friend of mine today. She lives in Seattle and her husband does work in the Vancouver area. They tried Irby's a couple of years ago I guess and said the food was great, but the service was horrible. They gave it one more chance since their first visit and said the second visit was worse than the first.

She told me that they drove past it this week and the place looked so great they just had to drop in and try it out one more time. Karly said is was fabulous! From what the two of them told me it was a completely different experience. Great job you guys. It looks like you Galeotti's are putting in a lot of blood, sweat and tears into turing the place around. I'm heading into Seattle in August to go visit them and she's so excited to take me out to lunch I just might let her pick up the tab. lol. Just wanted to give you guys a good report. I hope you all have a very blessed week.

I don't know if this will work there but here in Rotterdam, the netherlands it did work for this couple who wanted to let everybody know about there restaurant! They prepared samples of the food that people can expect when they come in to eat and they went out on to a busy street and the market to give everybody a taste and a reason to come in to there restaurant and get some more! If they like what they taste they will come in and ofcourse spread the news.

Also there are a lot of people on this site with there own Blog or website, maybe if you can get everyone to advertise for you guys and I don't just mean write about it but like a link or something this might help to spread the word.

Best of luck to you all and enjoy the grand opening!

I had one more thought...I'm assuming you guys are working on a website with the menu and prices things like that but what if you also had a twitter account and you could tweet each days specials?

How bout banking on Bethany's fan base if anything? Probably try spreading the word that she'll be performing a few of her songs like her duet with Enation and such.... I bet there are alot of them out there that want to see her perform up close. Also, how about offering something for the first ummm....50 guests at the restaurant...free drink or something. But what I believe is that if your food's good and the environment's good they'll come back but also I think you need to up your "umph" factor to stand out where your situated

I always like going to places that have "theme nights." I live in Raleigh, NC and there is a great little place that offers a special every night of the week. i think using your celebrity would be pretty good, but i'd say go more the way of everly & enation. i think the oth crowd is too vast & it might take away from the family atmosphere that you're wanting.

i think what someone said about about t-shirts is a really good idea. i don't know how dressy or anything your restaurant is, but even classy restaurants have shirts. i think you will definitely get some traffic from fanatics across the country hoping to catch a glimpse of joy. & they will all want proof that they went to her restaurant & i'm sure their friends will too! i know if i had a friend go, i'd make them get me something. so i think any sort of memorabilia would be good. i know every time i take a trip i have to buy a shirt from at least one place i eat & then every one asks me about it when i wear the shirt & the next time they go anywhere near there i say they have to eat there. so people are pretty much paying to advertise for you. also, every time i see a shirt i bought at a restaurant, i automatically want to go eat there.

the whole hotel networking would be great too. i always ask hotel people or AAA people where to eat when out of town.

also what someone said about having a menu outside is HUGE! i am one of the pickiest eaters ever, so my family won't even go into a restaurant unless i see a menu because we don't want to walk right back out & feel like jerks. but if there is a menu outside they will immediately see something they want & force me to find at least one thing that i will eat & we can go in. but also if you see a menu, you can all of a sudden crave something you never even knew you wanted. it's like watching the food network, you see something & you just have to have it.

good luck!

I don't think this was mentioned, but you could always make a facebook, myspace, or twitter group about your restaurant with special deals through the different sites. I've heard about a lot of deals through facebook. It's a larger market and a great way to get your name out there. Otherwise, there's always fliers, raidio/ tv commercials, or you could just have coupons printed in the newspaper for your restaurant. Try to contact a local paper for some coverage. They're always looking for stuff to cover. Good luck!

Jen said...

Post on Craigslist. Check with your local newspapers, radio stations, etc and see if they have free community calendars that you can put the grand opening on. Have your menu (with prices!) available online, and coupons are always a big draw for me as a customer. I don't know what it costs, but look in to the local Entertainment Book. How about putting your flyers in hotel and B&B lobbies or guest room books and offering a small discount for anyone who brings it in. Pair up with a local school or other favorite charity and do a flyer night where they have to distribute the flyers and then they get a portion of proceeds from anyone who brings the flyer in on the correct date/time. Form a facebook, myspace and twitter page. Ask your friends and co-stars to tweet it, too because they all have their own circles of influence. Have an email list and email out specials, menus, coupons etc--constantcontact.com has a good, affordable program. Have a link to join the mailing list on your website.

Honestly, I also think decluttering this blog would be a good move, too. Keep blogging, but maybe it could look a little more tidy?

Do you buy food from co-ops or markets that also sell retail? Ask them to distribute flyers on your behalf.

Plan a progressive dinner with another restaurant (that's a totally different kind of food so not competition). Sell tickets for a flat price that includes a limited selection of whatever (entree, appetizer, drink, etc) at each restaurant. The cross publicity should help both you, and them.

Make friends with the neighboring businesses. Offer employees cheap beverages (so they can come down during their shifts, etc). They're more likely to return with their families, and to refer you the next time one of their customers says (hey, where can I get a good...)

Just a few ideas. I'm a huge fan of BJGs and OTH so I followed the OTH fans link here!

Madison said...

You guys should definitely get a facebook going for the restaurant. those OTH fans will help you get the word out!

This probably isn't the most realistic, but maybe the writer's of OTH could incorporate the title "Galeotti's" into an episode and then at the end say actual location Battle Ground, WA.

I just did a whole project on sales promotions for my Marketing class, so maybe I can think of a few more suggestions to help you out.

Having a sweepstakes of some sort. There's a restaurant here in Canada (can't remember if it was East Side Mario's or not) that had a wheel for customers to spin after the meal, and there would be a large variety of prizes.. like 2 for 1, free meal, free drink, and so on. Good way to get people to come back.

This restaurant in the GTA (around toronto) had a free food day on Canada Day where people could get a free dish or something. Doing any type of sampling can be good at getting customers since they actually can experience it without any risk. I really thought it was smart to link it to a holiday.. I dunno if Labour Day Special has the same effect.. but maybe it's something you can think about for Halloween. . .

Tim Horton's (I apologize for my blatant Canadian-ness) - a low price coffee and donut shop basically.. Every year they do a rrrrrooolll up the rim to win.. Which is exactly what it sounds like.. It's a HUGE chain in Canada so it has big prizes, but something interesting like that if you serve coffee. . . Or even linking it to other menu items..

I really love something Burger King is doing right now with Transformers. They have a scratch card and one thing you scratch is a winner and the other is not. So you have a 50/50 chance of getting something free every time.

Any type of continuity program. You know how you can get cards and stamp them every time someone has a meal, and after 5, they get a free meal.. It's a good way at getting people to come back. It's a good way of rewarding the people who do come in. . .

Toronto has this thing called summerlicious and winterlicious where many restaurants come together (that are generally pricier) and offer people a 3 course meal for set prices (like 15 dollars).. so you can see what type of events are in your area and try something interesting like that.

Are you guys first come first serve, or taking reservations at a certain point?

I loved your ad in Family Values! The name pronunciation lesson was cute also! I also have an Italian last name so I empathize!

My husband and I plan to be regular customers of Galeotti's!
